New York City Park Department Contractor Tears Up Imperiled Sparrows Home

A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.” It looks to me like they drove a crane straight through this section of what’s called Four Sparrow Marsh. Not anymore.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of June 2016)

June in the Northern Hemisphere brings birds on their breeding grounds, some still frisky and others settled down taking care of their chicks. We have House Sparrow , Rock Pigeon , and European Starling like almost everyone else along with the usual Ring-billed Gulls that join them in winter. However, they do not settle down and setup breeding territories at my local inland locations until the latter half of April.

May Migration in Queens

My spring has been pretty amazing so far with 146 species spotted since April 1 and Cerulean , Worm-eating , and Yellow-throated Warblers and a host of other species spotted before May even arrived, but the first couple of days in May have been even better.

What Birds Will Get Me To 300 In Queens?

Two of the four Lark Sparrows I have seen in Queens Two out of ten is not good enough, leaving me smack-dab on the Mendoza Line. Here they are in chronological order: Grasshopper Sparrow - 21 May 2011 – A bird I wasn’t even thinking of until I found one singing at Edgemere Landfill. I must do better!

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. An April Weekend of New York City Birding

This first birding vignette is actually from just before the weekend, when I was at Alley Pond Park on a day that I was miraculously released from work a tiny bit early and was hoping to find a Yellow-throated Warbler but settled for a Swamp Sparrow by Little Alley Pond. At the same location a Chipping Sparrow also cooperated for pictures.
