What is the State Bird of Minnesota?

Minnesota legislators named the loon their state bird in 1961, as their state has more Common Loons than any other barring Alaska. To successfully hunt and breed they need clean and clear lakes, and so are sensitive to pollution that affects both them and/or their fishy prey.

These globally threatened raptors breed from Ukraine eastward through Siberia and only a few come to overwinter here. Several poachers were waiting in ever thickening darkness (Serbian legislation forbids night hunting). The biggest count ever was less than 10 birds in the whole of Serbia.

Peregrine Falcons at the National Wildlife Refuges

With the help of a captive breeding program, the Peregrine bounced back, and in 1999, they were removed from the Endangered Species List. BBC Nature has a really cool video of the Peregrine hunting a pigeon in a stoop. They were officially listed as Endangered in 1970 in the U.S. Peregrine Falcon at Delevan National Wildlife Refuge.

The Great Egret was in breeding plumage and courtship posture–bright lime green lores, head bending down and then snapping up, long, impossibly delicate plumes waving over its body as if possessed by independent spirits. I thought about those plumes and about how fortunate we were to be seeing this egret in all its glory.
