Though breeding grounds for neotropical migrants get the bulk of attention in North America wintering grounds are just as critical, and any news about land being preserved as wintering habitat for the Cerulean Warbler is wonderful. A Guan was collected in 1876 in a mangrove forest near the border between Peru and Ecuador. These conditions offered easy access to hunters in a habitat where a bird as large as a Guan would have little chances to hide or scape. This flock is composed of about 54 birds including nine breeding pair.

Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.
