A breeding bird atlas is a special kind of book. Corey did just this in this 2011 posting about Vesper Sparrow Pooecetes gramineus in New York State. I was also curious, as a birder of the northeast United States, to see what kind of avian changes have been going on in Pennsylvania.

After securing our passage, I patiently waited for this once-in-a-lifetime experience to a place we have never been and lacked any knowledge of, we were in for a complete surprise. About half of all breeding Wandering Albatross nest on the Prince Edward Islands. Regardless, we made it Marion and all else added to the experience.

Atlantic Puffins are easier to see, and see well, in Maine than anywhere else in the United States. For nearly a hundred years, after the eggers, meat-hunters, plume-hunters, and a human-influenced gull population boom, puffins were absent from the island. Most of our looks were much better than this. A legless guillemot?

Living in Colorado, I was practically next door neighbors to a Spix’s Macaw, “Presley,” who was discovered in an Evergreen living room—the only known Spix’s Macaw in the United States—and who was repatriated to Brazil before I even knew he existed. The Magnificent Frigatebird is the bird I would want to see.

We are all suckers for an albatross, at least in the United States. This is the story of Fox’s experiences on board the Achiever, the research vessel of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. She is one of the best nature writers I’ve encountered in recent years, able to paint experiences with emotional immediacy.
