Marlborough Sounds has a pretty special endemic, the King Shag , a species that isn’t just endemic to New Zealand but endemic to just the Sounds. The reason Alan had come was to film another endemic, a critically endangered species, the Orange-fronted Parakeet. I didn’t see one, probably.

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded. It is helpful to have a sample paper.

The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation. The USVI are smaller and have fewer habitats and, as a result, fewer bird species. Puerto Rico has a checklist of 269 species, 207 of which are migratory and the USVI has a checklist of 149 species, 124 of which are migratory.

Mai Po Nature Reserve : world famous locale for shorebirds, waterfowl, waders, and wetland birds; wintering grounds for certain endangered species. The combination of these scheduled and informal birding efforts culminated in an amazing 135 species seen, many of which were lifers for me! SPECIES LIST. Do your research.
