This bird species is known to travel large distances around Australia. The Magpie Geese have dispersed from the previous area they were in, because it got too wet. They are no doubt breeding here once again this year. They are quite possibly here to breed once again. Wedge-tailed Eagle -bigger than the cattle!?

In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing.

Munkajarra Wetlands is always a good location for the various duck species and you can expect to observe Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Pacific Black Ducks , Hardheads , Grey Teal and sometimes Radjah Shelducks and Pink-eared Ducks. Magpie Geese , Whistling Kite and Cormorants at roost. Purple Swamphens.

We immediately headed to an undisclosed location where Carlos had breeding Mangrove Cuckoos staked out. The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. We needed countable species!

Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage.
