Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) recently proposed reintroducing California Condors in the Pacific Northwest. After years of study , FWS has proposed releasing captive-bred condors in Redwoods National Park in Northern California, not far from the Oregon border. But condors have not been in the Pacific Northwest for more than a century.

Even our local Greater Sage Grouse , which now are receiving a huge effort at habitat protection, and restoration, were just those really cool birds out in the desert. The State of Oregon, in 1975 listed the bird as Threatened, and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that status in 1989 under the Oregon Endangered Species Act.

A week ago today, the federal government proposed a “threatened” listing for the Greater Sage Grouse in Nevada and California , as part of a larger study considering whether the species as a whole should be listed. As such, I am delighted to see them receive protection. Naturally, not everyone is equally delighted.

The Service also proposes expanding hunting and sport fishing on the following refuges: California. The Sacramento River NWR was established 1989 by the authority provided under the Endangered Species Act, Emergency Wetlands Resources Act, and the Fish and Wildlife Act. The refuge is already open to sport fishing.

Following passage of the United States Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the California Condor ( Gymnogyps californianus ) was among the first 75 species listed for protection, the so-called “Class of 1967”. By any measure, the recovery of the California Condor has been a remarkable success.
