Most of the birds I spotted this weekend are the same species I’ll be hanging out with all winter. Most of the breeders seemed to have departed already on their journeys south but he did enjoy a Barred Owl serenade in the wee hours of the morning two days in a row so the Barred Owl wins as his Best Bird of the Weekend.

I’m to the point that I wish all the Snowy Owls in the US this winter would head back north. There’s been some confusing info because Project SNOWStorm also captured and put a transmitter on a first winter female Snowy Owl around the same time in the same area. Many get their birds from breeders. Go home now!”

Near as I can tell, that horrific “huahhh” was coming from a Barred Owl apparently as confused about its evening’s itinerary as I was. I haven’t yet been birding in Europe but whenever I occasionally skim a field guide about the birds on the other side of the Atlantic, I’m always encouraged to find that I’m already familiar with many species found over there, even though most of my birding experience has been limited to eastern North America.
