Eagle-eyed Pat spotted a Lesser Black-backed Gull in nonbreeding plumage and other birders that week noted a Thayer’s Gull (which we may have seen too–I mean, who expects Iceland Gull in April?). Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian.

Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. For longest lists, go there in May when migrants are still passing while the local breeders are active and visible. Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones). Other taxa.

We went to settle into our room, and since I had about an hour to kill before dinner, I took a quick walk around the property. Sadly, I missed out on seeing White-tailed Eagles and Harlequin Ducks. However, service is limited during the off-season so we elected to take the longer, yet more scenic route.

Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills. They have even been known to kill children who have been incautious enough to approach too closely. They also prey on frogs and crabs.

The eagle-owls of the genus Bubo are all called “Uhu“. As a rule of thumb, with quite a number of exceptions, if the species sports feathery ears and is not an eagle-owls, it’s an “Eule“. You know, cavity breeders. I’d like to point out though that “owly“ is a poor translation.
