Midsummer birding can become boring if you focus solely on species counts. The general lack of longitudinal movement among birds limits most areas to the same restricted pool of resident breeders every year. Canada Geese are never as interesting as when escorting those adorable goslings!

It goes without saying that our three breeding species of mergansers in the United States are amongst the most brilliantly colored birds we have. Red-breasted Mergansers occupy most of Canada and into Alaska for breeding with some of the norther tier of the United States. How about the bill? What do you think?
