The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period). There probably is a Billy Bragg song about them.

The authors’ detailed delineation of problems with the accuracy of NYC breeding bird surveys or with the limits of historical writings may test a reader’s patience. It’s a very mixed chapter.

During breeding season, their white plumage turns a delicate pink color, a lovely sight indeed.

Like manky mallards, ganky geese display remarkable variety due to both the methodical manipulations of breeders and the variable volatility of the more natural kind of breeding. Feral geese run the gamut from pure white to almost entirely gray or brown. We certainly see enough of them, don’t we?

But then, I am not a cooperative breeder either (nor a non-cooperative one, should this term exist). Taking photos of such a rare species is a bit of a double-edged sword. Well, they live in groups, something I would never survive.
