And, though I think you can argue that the Bronx Zoo, with its numerous buildings and landscaped wildlife areas is not purely ‘natural space,’ I have wonderful memories of traipsing through its wooded areas when I was a girl. (I I didn’t grow up in the Bronx, but my best friend did.). It’s a very mixed chapter.

Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge offers a fine show of raptors and waterfowl, Modoc National Wildlife Refuge has reliable Trumpeter Swans in winter, and the Warner Mountains are home to Cordilleran Flycatcher in spring and summer. Northeastern California. Fall through spring.

Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity. We certainly see enough of them, don’t we?

Birders who have been to California might be familiar with the latter two, indeed we would be close to the Poor Knights Islands later in the day, the site of the only breeding colony of Buller’s Shearwaters in the whole world. It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island.

I knew I would not be seeing the bird in its rosy-breasted breeding plumage, but somehow seeing the bird in all its forms helped crystallize its appearance in my head. or birds that look very different in their breeding and non-breeding plumages (Shorebirds! I studied it. Sadly, I still did not see the bird.
