It took me a while to wrap my mind around the concept of Birds and People , Mark Cocker and David Tipling’s book that, in 592 pages, explores the intersection of just that—birds and us. Still, I found it a little disjointing that a book has been written about our relationship with birds. So, I just sit here, amazed at this book.

I get that you’re really angry, I mean, he was a popular lion and yes, his cute widdle cubs will probably die to, but I can’t help feeling you’ve kind of missed the point a bit, and well, ending all hunting in Africa will not solve much and maybe make things worse and… No, no, I’m not a hunter. I’m sorry.

In retrospect, it kind of makes me wonder what image the organizers who booked the hotel for me had of German academic visitors … So much for my quasi-madeleine moment, though of course less emotionally attractive than the one described by Mr. Proust. of its hunts are successful. Back to birds. Then, there are raptors.

So a book about birds by Julie Zickefoose, featuring her writing and art, some of which has been featured in different forms on her blog, is guaranteed to be a hit with me. First of all, the 384-page book is beautiful from hardcover to hardcover, literally. But her writing is not the dry text of a biology book or scientific paper.

It didn’t occur to me till I started reading The Falcon Thief: A True Tale of Adventure, Treachery, and the Hunt for the Perfect Bird that there was also a possible threat to the eagle herself: poachers, who steal raptor eggs and chicks. 2019), and now this book. Apo classroom, learning about their national bird through stories narrated from a huge book and acted out by a huge Philippine Eagle (a costumed adult). “Will you shoot an eagle?”
