When I saw that a book had been published about her, I ordered it even though it’s an oversized art book (some would say coffee table book), a type of book I seldom buy or read. This is NOT an image from the book. And I’m so happy I did. and died 15 August 1841.

The website then hastens to add that “Unfortunately, there isn’t much scientific research on the poop of the upland buzzard” I bet some ornithology students do not find this particularly unfortunate. Some ornithological research is surprisingly simple. This individual first did not fully comply.

And the book is about much more, ripple effects from what happens when part of a living thing becomes the central ingredient to a highly visual, social, profitable business. As a librarian and women’s studies scholar, I greatly appreciate the research. The late Victorian age was not a good time to be an egret!

There is a long list of articles and books on how to feed birds in your yard. So, I was happy to see the publication of a book on all aspects of wild bird feeding—history, culture, and economics. It is a serious book with a friendly attitude. There was cleaning, lots of cleaning of feeders and yard. And squirrels.

Steve, another member of our birding group, also had a field guide by Kenefick, Restall, and Hayes, but his was bordered in GREEN, had a slightly different title, and, to my extreme chagrin, was much more recent, showing the recently split Trinidad Motmot instead of the Blue-crowned Motmot on my book’s cover. I was confused.

The Pough & Eckelberry guides (add in artist Earl L Poole who did black-and-white drawings for the later titles) were notable for Pough’s discursive text and Eckelberry’s lovely painted portraits, and many older birders have stories about how they were inspired by these books. So, yes, Thayer’s Gull is in the book, but the reader is cautioned that the gull with be lumped with Iceland Gull “in the near future.” You may also be thinking about a third question: What bird books should I give myself for the holidays? The answer takes one click (after you read this review).
