In mid-December, I was birding along the Beljarica levee (Beh-LYAH-ritza), my local patch north of Belgrade, when something other than birds attracted my attention: three wild boars , appearing all black because they had just swam through the swamp to reach the bottom of the levee. From that year onward my work became dedicated to the protection of the area, as well as promotion of local ecotourism possibilities. With more than 312 so far recorded bird species, Lake Kerkini National Park offers great birding year-round. and up to 9000 pairs forms in the north of the lake.

Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice. The first time I spotted some movement on the water, focused my binos to see a Common Moorhen , but, hey, there’s something deep behind it, focusing further and seeing two otters diving and surfacing, swirling and playing. And how about Black Storks, otters and eagles?

The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. Supposedly, in Spring this area is teeming with migrating passerines, but in September, I recorded a mere dozen species, including very numerous Red-backed Shrikes (9 in this area alone). eBird hotspots of Prespa lakes. Practicalities.
