White-tailed Eagles in Beljarica. It is a spacious floodplain between the River Danube and the levee, 2.1 mi at its widest point and some 9 km2 / 3.5 It all started well three decades ago, when I intensively birded the Danube Backwaters by kayak. As a teenager in Yugoslavia, I used to buy National Geographic in second-hand bookshops.

A sounder of Indian Boars is watching us from the jungle. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home! One Chital is curiously watching us.

There are also wild boars and macaque monkeys and you are advised to not rustle plastic bags, because they associate the noise with food. We encountered a Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying through the area, which kindly landed in a tree and allowed for photography! Grey-headed Fish Eagle.

There were wild boars and monitors rustling through the leaves as well as the plantain squirrels that we had become so accustomed to. Asian Glossy Starlings , Javan Mynas , Spotted Doves , Common Flameback , Pacific Swallows , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Common Kingfisher , White-bellied Sea Eagle and Red Junglefowl were soon on the list.
