One good thing about birding during a pandemic–the forced restrictions on place and time translate into more time to observe what birds do. Bird behavior–endlessly fascinating, but so much still hidden and unknown. Extreme behaviors also push scientists to look at birds in new ways.

Heading out of Ecclesdown Road on the second day of my trip, I had nailed all of my targets save four species ( Caribbean Dove , Yellow-billed Parrot , Jamaican Owl , and Stolid Flycatcher ). I told her that I had three target birds left to see, and she gestured at a tree near the guesthouse where three Jamaican Owls were roosting.

With limited time and preferring to bird alone in a natural environment we headed into the nature reserve and away from the springs. It was a very hot day and there had been a bush-fire right to the reserve border only a few weeks prior to our visit and as such we did not have particularly high hopes for a lot of birds.

As keen birdwatchers, who just happened to have found the Night Parrots in Western Australia, they were keen to look for the Fairy Pitta at first light the next day. It gets interesting here, because the bar manager had no idea it was a rare bird and was just helping out a bird that had flown into a window. There it was!

Whether you enjoy hiking, birding or cycling there is something for everyone. There were many birds high up in the trees in the Perth Hills and it made for challenging birding! Around the picnic area at the weir the Galahs were busy on the ground feeding and the ground was also littered with the tips of the trees.

Whilst we were planning our trip to Sydney we were hoping to fit some hiking and birding into our schedule and found a great website that would help us decide on some walks. As it was about 10kms long we knew it would take more than the 4 hours mentioned if we were birding, so would be a day out. We continued on along the trail.

Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, which comprises the twin volcanoes Gede and Pangrango (with gunung meaning “mountain”), surely must rate as one of the birding highlights of Southeast Asia, and is arguably the most important and well-known birding site on the island of Java. Allow for at least three days if you can.
