Fur and Fangs rather than Feathers and Beaks

10,000 Birds

Note the short legs, stout body and white rump and tail I see Muntjac on virtually every birding (or dog-walking) outing, as these small Asian deer are now very numerous around my home in the Suffolk Brecks. I’ve yet to see one in the UK, but I had a memorable encounter with one while birding from a small boat on a river in Lithuania.

The top-5 birds of 2018

10,000 Birds

What qualifies a bird to be included in the top-5? This version extended the list a bit and it turned out that almost every fourth bird was an one-monther. Somewhat unfairly, the second criterion was that I described the observation at 10,000 Birds. The post The top-5 birds of 2018 appeared first on 10,000 Birds.

The Six Good Birds of Christmas

10,000 Birds

Spotting scope review: Swarovski 25-60×65 STX

10,000 Birds

My best bird of the weekend was a Great Black-backed Gull , a rarity in a land-locked Serbia, with less than 10 observations so far. Alright, it did focused on the weldings of the barge and not the bird, but it was still amazing. (I winter waterfowling at fish farms), but always preferred to leave it behind.

Definitively the Egyptians!

10,000 Birds

In short, the accepted view used to be that a small breeding population of Egyptian Vultures inhabited Southern Africa, but has vanished facing the spread of towns, roads and farms. It was not the first note I have published, but was the only one about a bird I have never laid my eyes upon!
