This diversity makes for a very unique birding experience. One where you get to enjoy the many different local desert birds, right along side the birds that make the warm salt waters they home. Here are a few of the birds we spotted last weekend. This, all bordered by the crystal clear waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Summer is too hot, the birds are quiet in fall, and winter is too cold. A whole bunch of pictures of the birds found around the cabin are below. It seemed to me like Western Scrub-Jays are as good as keeping a sentinel bird up as Florida Scrub-Jays. Oh well, the trail was nice and the kids liked the nice looks at Mule Deer.

These younger rams were having a great time playing “king of the rock” So much for the history of the area, lets talk about the birds! With water, comes birds, so I set off in search.

Along this journey from pass to valley and back again, we spotted Wild Turkey and Western Wood Pee-wee , Ravens and Red-tailed Hawks , mule deer and elk, even the white-striped tail of a Dark-eyed Junco disappearing into the shadow of the trees. Then, I spotted a slender head rising from a big bird’s body.

Of course, excellent opportunity to go birding with my friends Brad and Laura. My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. This is a simple grey and black bird but I have always wanted to see one.
