Tundra Swan at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. I was psyched to see the one that had been reported but first I had to do some other birding on Sunday morning to keep my year list moving along. Once I got my trip out to Breezy Point (four year birds!)

Ruby-throated Hummingbird Nest at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

Fortunately for me, a kind birder pointed out a ruby-throat in the process of building a nest at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge last week and the nest is relatively low and unobstructed. Make sure to swing by 10,000 Birds for updates! She sits tight in this video. Check out how her head-shape changes when she moves her feathers.

10,000 Birds

This past Friday, after leaving Cupsogue where my twitch for the Wilson’s Plover had ended in success I decided to head back over to Big Egg Marsh in my home borough of Queens to see if I could rediscover the Burrowing Owl I had seen the previous evening could be rediscovered. Sadly, the owl remained missing.

Another (Almost) Big Day in Queens

10,000 Birds

A week ago this past Friday I did a Queens Big Day in that I spent the whole day birding across a variety of parks in Queens looking for birds. I didn’t plan it well and I was mostly just enjoying birding my favorite borough for the entire day. Birding, it’s dangerous ! So, this past Friday, I did it again.
