If you read my last post, you will know that my last three weekly outings were not overly productive, as far as birds are concerned. But any birder can tell you that a bad day birding is better than a good day almost anywhere else. For me, that has a lot to do with all the beautiful places I get to be, while looking for birds.

Lady, believed to be the oldest living Osprey in the United Kingdom, has laid her 62nd egg. It is her 22nd year nesting at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Loch of the Lowes reserve in Perthshire. Hat-tip to Redgannet.

Now that passerine migration has largely wound down the attention of this New York birder has shifted to seabirds, shorebirds, and the occasional trip looking for breeding birds. It is a great spot for Horseshoe Crabs to spawn and lay eggs so it is no wonder that shorebirds congregate to eat those eggs.

They emerged from their bloody rampage leaving fifteen adults dead, and fifteen destroyed nests with either smashed or missing eggs. The young men had severed the birds’ legs in order to remove the tags. In the following days harrowing photos of dead birds and severed body parts were posted on social media pages.

In 2011, a collaborative effort among state and federal wildlife agencies teamed up with Louisiana’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to begin releasing captive-bred birds into the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area. A pair from the released batch set up housekeeping last month and lo and behold, eggs gave way to chicks.

The park is managed for the benefit of the wildlife and made accessible for visitors with a footpath along the lakeshore and out onto spits that allow a closer approach to the heronry. The storks begin to arrive from August and will usually be sitting on eggs by October. Eggs often fall victim to the ubiquitous House Crow.

Another species of Python, the African Python ( Python sebae ) has established a small population in the 2,877-acre Bird Drive Area (BDA) in South Florida.
