In the previous period I wrote mostly book reviews (but of some really great books ), yet I cannot remember when the last time was that I wrote of birding itself? Perhaps in my December posts on birding Colombian Amazonia ? Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm.

But when you’re moving closer to great birding, there are some consolations. Turning in the other direction to reach the Kim Williams Nature Trail, I was treated almost immediately to the most confiding Nashville Warbler I have ever met, a handsome male bird who landed on a branch just a few yards from my face to sing.

Of course, excellent opportunity to go birding with my friends Brad and Laura. My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. This is a simple grey and black bird but I have always wanted to see one.

Visitors on the Range

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. There are also rattlesnakes, amazing views, fascinating tales of history and prehistory, and of course, many birds. It’s hard to say.
