A few days ago my friend Melissa Gilmer called me from the Bear Mountain Zoo in New York’s Hudson Highlands. “We Maybe the vet will find something amiss. Say what you will about pigeons – they’re among the most extraordinary athletes in the bird kingdom. Andy dug up this video of a pigeon pulling a similar stunt in Australia.

Lanthier, a veterinarian and walrus researcher who took the helm in Calgary two years ago, says the cancellation of the polar bears exhibit might please some animal-rights extremists, but the reality is a blow to Canada's white bears.

It was Los Angeles, after all, where mileage has no bearing on time, but where time was precious for my little rescue on this crystal morning. The vet confirmed pain, injury and infection from her life on the streets, common afflictions for stray cats. I scrambled for a box. The wildlife center was an hour away if I was lucky.
