Our campsite was gorgeous North Lake State Park in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, where the air is crisp, the forests are largely intact, and the bears force you to be careful about leaving food out when you go to sleep. We spent our evenings cooking, playing cards, enjoying adult beverages, and listening to Barred Owls duets.

It’s almost a bucolic place; sea turtles nest on the beaches, Humpback Whales and bat rays frolic just offshore, and you can buy the freshest fish from the panga fisherman at Punta Lobos every afternoon. They do bear some resemblance to Sage Thrashers , but have a much heavier, more sickle-shaped bill.

Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks. Might I assume that women typically bear fewer children, or fewer survive? In this case, they would be exhibiting polyandry. Wicked, right?
