Monterrey Meetings

Work brings me regularly to Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, northern Mexico. We finally reached Mesa de Oso , the table (mountain) of the bear. Our main goal here was the Maroon-fronted Parrot. These parrots breed inside cavities in cliffs and they are very particular about the cliff. It was amazing.

National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. The rest of Mexico is not included, nor is Hawaii (which isn’t in North America, after all, but has been accepted as part of the American Birding Association area).

At 3-4 inches long , they rival those of the great Grizzly Bear, and allow the Harpy Eagles to go after prey unavailable to many other birds. Because they like to hunt in the tree canopy , they will also eat “iguanas, parrots, porcupines, coatimundis, and raccoons.”

These are the numbers acheived by 10 (we have a new contributor, Paul, from Mexico) beats during May; We visited 8 countries (Costa Rica, USA, UK, Australia, Serbia, Greece, Kuwait and Mexico) and noted 776 birds from 160 checklists. Red-crowned Parrot – Amazona viridigenalis. Blue-rumped Parrot – Psittinus cyanurus.
