While photographing the Brown Bears in the Russian Far East, a friend of mine, Jovan “Lucky” Lakatos, was with Michio Hoshino, Japanese-born nature photographer specialized in Alaskan wildlife and experienced in how to behave facing this apex predator. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps.

My Subtropical Bird Garden

Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. We share some plant options with southern California, and others with Florida. And it bears for more than half the year! And nothing more. Salvias, salvias, salvias!

High Noon Birding in the Mountains of Los Angeles

The beauty of this area is breathtaking, though the burned trunks are reminders that it is still recovering from the disastrous Station Fire of 2009, which scorched over 250 square miles and killed two firefighters. Probably much more of a serious threat than the bear scat we occasionally spied or the threat of poodle-bush rash.
