The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The grand total is 817 species!

What this press release doesn’t mention about the amount of money pumped into the economy by the National Wildlife Refuge System, as stated in the Banking on Nature Report, about 72 percent of total expenditures are generated by non-consumptive activities on refuges!

This small pine tree was very recently demolished by a brown bear. Those were amongst the most annoying field guides to use on the “continent” as so many potentially confusing species were left out. species found only around the Mediterranean or in Europe’s Southeast.

It’s the bird family that most people don’t know is a bird family. For many years it was thought the two bird families were related taxonomically. It includes a table listing the species, subspecies, author and date of original description, which I found quite handy in sorting out the birds. Introduction.

The field site I am assigned to is located in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to a particularly rich avifauna that numbers well over 500 species. Hundreds of riotously colored birds representing 14 species of macaws and parrots flock and frolic together in less than fifty meters of forest canopy.

And, to give his dream year a little more oomph, he created a grand once-in-a-lifetime goal: to track down and see every pitta species in the world in one year. And sun bears. It’s what I dream of every Monday morning. And mosquitos. And leeches.

Nice. ((** all names have been changed to protect identities and have been substituted with (almost) randomly chosen substitutes suitable for a family of Alpine Accentors.)) Might I assume that women typically bear fewer children, or fewer survive? small families putting less pressure on the adult members of the family).
