That’s right, I, along with my family and some really good friends, was camping. Our campsite was gorgeous North Lake State Park in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, where the air is crisp, the forests are largely intact, and the bears force you to be careful about leaving food out when you go to sleep.

The winds this weekend in western New York must have been favorable for migration, because the only nonresident I could track down was a Swainson’s Thrush. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was one of the several Black Vultures that went overhead during a family hike to Anthony’s Nose in the Hudson Valley.

The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act.

The experience is one of the ornithological highlights in the world. The crowd of macaws is soon joined by parrots arriving as if on cue and bearing their colorfully named body parts: Yellow-crowned , Blue-headed , White-bellied , Orange-cheeked , and Mealy – followed by two species of parakeets – Dusky-headed and White-eyed.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. A three-part trip report for Hong Kong including the Orange-headed Thrush and visiting Tai Mo Shan , Cheun Lung Family Walk, and Aberdeen Reservoirs, can be found on Redgannet. It’s fairly easy to guess that oud bruin means “old brown” in Dutch – and with that I’m going to end the Dutch lessons because, while it was once spoken here in Albany, New York, it was supplanted by English a few centuries ago and I don’t know a lick of it beyond a handful of beer terms. Good birding and happy drinking!
