In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting.

But hands-on bird experience has been a major gap in my knowledge to date and I’m astounded at how much more I’m discovering about birds. They have long raptor-like wings that enable swift flight, large eyes for nocturnal hunting, bristles close to the bill to aid in prey capture and a mouth that truly defies description.

There were opportunities to go to far flung places like the islands of the Pacific or the coast of Canada or the Yorkshire Dales… Anyway, as I was obsessed by Africa at the time, I leapt at the opportunity to go to Namibia to collect samples of bat DNA for a biogeography project. I think we caught perhaps three bats.

The selections appear to largely reflect Hauber’s personal experiences around the world and he does occasionally bring himself into the essay, reflecting on a European Robin he observes at dusk in northwestern Germany or searching for American Robin nests on a tree farm in the Midwestern United States.

He introduces ideas and slowly builds on them, staring with the outbreak of Hendra in people and horses in Queensland before moving the story to his own experiences of great ape die-off when he was covering Michael Fay’s Megatransect in the Congo Basin. The disease had killed a tourist like ourselves. This lake is close to the cave.

Later, Harry Fuller, President of the Klamath Bird Observatory, led us to an open meadow where we saw a pair of Great Gray Owls hunting in a meadow. The experience, the place, and the bird combine to make this my BBOTY. the scene where Jochen’s saw his BBOTY – a Bat Hawk. Larry’s BBOTY – Great Gray Owl.

Recent publicity about these remarkable tribes has resulted in tourists wanting to experience this wild land and its attractions for themselves. They are traditionally pastoral people, but have from necessity accepted agriculture, fishing and crocodile hunting as means of survival.
