Big Ticks; What Was Your Last New Family?

I got my first Emus ( Dromaius novaehollandiae ), family Casuariidae, in West Australia back in 2000. Here in New Zealand te only potential big tick would be a lost vagrant painted snipe, and we’ve already established that I don’t enjoy that kind of vagrant hunting.

This week finds us flying from Melbourne, Australia, to Alice Springs, in the center of this incredibly large country. This is truly the center if Australia, no matter what method you use to decided the actual location of dead center. But the diversity, that I have found to be Australia, remains.

Birding across the north of Australia in July

In Australia it is winter in July, but the weather is as perfect as you could hope for in the north of the country with daytime temperatures around 30c/86f and the night-time temperatures being around 20c/68f and rarely a cloud in the sky. Red Kangaroos. Australian Bustard. An area of highway that floods. Fuel sign at Borroloola.

Birding Nabang, Yunnan (2)

“Now the kangaroos are drinking from the pool” (Jen is from Australia). In one study , the bird used electric power lines as a perch in 63% of all hunts, which makes me wonder how the bird survived before there were power lines. I am paralyzed just thinking about how to do it.
