Pied Oystercatchers breeding in Broome

This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation. Pied Oystercatcher family.

Pink-eared Ducks-a favourite duck

For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. Their movements and breeding is determined by rainfall and for that reason they are not always where you think they might be.

Oriental Plovers Charadrius veredus are a species of shorebird that we see in varying numbers around Broome and they may be on the beach, feeding on insects across the plains or at the ephemeral lakes. During February there have been astonishingly high numbers some years and this has been as a result of insect activity.

Tawny Frogmouth nesting

One of the most camouflaged birds in Australia is the Tawny Frogmouth and we often hear them at night when we are camping in the bush, but the chance of seeing them is less likely. They breed after rain events and this was exactly the situation once again. The dam was very full and there were numerous species of birds present.

Tropical Cyclone Iggy

This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. There are very few areas in Roebuck Bay that shorebirds can roost on very high tides due to the cliffs and many of the larger species will go out onto the land behind the mangroves.
