It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. So, the basic idea is to show 15 species of Australian birds in each post and give you the usual trivia about them. And that seems to be the only vaguely satisfying thing left to do at the moment.

Wonderful Wedgies

The species ranges widely across the Pacific, as its scientific name suggests, from the Revillagigedo Islands off Mexico to the Japanese Bonin Islands to New South Wales in Australia. But it also occurs in the Indian Ocean, from Aldabra near Madagascar to Western Australia.

Fluttering Shearwater ( Puffinus gavia ) Flesh-footed Shearwater ( Puffinus carneipes ) Buller’s Shearwater ( Puffinus bulleri ) Along with these three were Two further species, also both familiar to North American birders, Sooty Shearwaters and Short-tailed Shearwaters. It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island.

Our Best Birds of 2020

are up next, with a wonderful Australian species: It is very hard to choose a Best Bird of the Year any year. Later in the year we were able to travel around the north of Western Australia. This weird little skulking waterfowl is a species I had hoped to chance upon in various places for quite some time. Clare (and Grant!)

Won’t Someone Think Of The Children?

But I had pictures of moorhens to show and luckily for me I did find something to write about for this species. And I’ve always assumed that the Dusky Moorhen, found in Sulawesi, New Guinea and Australia was basically more of the same, but I was wrong! I’ll admit I haven’t thought much about moorhens in the past.
