White’s Thrush or Scaly?

Species searches on eBird reveal that both species might be found in Tokyo, though White’s is much more common, with a few contemporary sightings. Birds of South Asia. Avian influenza H5N2 in the Mississippi and Pacific Flyways

And, of course, the reputation of certain species of birds as troublemakers for humans is a problem in bird conservation, so this is worth watching. H5N2 is a subtype of Influenza A, and infects many species of birds including those mentioned as well as ducks (domestic and wild). This is the first finding in the Mississippi flyway.

Best Bird of the Year 2013

My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Oriental Pied Hornbills are common enough and probably the most likely hornbill to be seen in many parts of SE Asia, but seeing them at such close quarters and seemingly so relaxed is unusual. With so much thrashing around in SE Asia, it is interesting to compare east and west hemispheres. 978 species were tallied this month from 163 checklists.
