Dollarbirds left Broome earlier this year to return to Asia. They had arrived from Asia and were being chased away by Torresian Crows. This line gets used every day by many bird species. It remains on the power line waiting for a mate to arrive from Asia. So much has happened in the world in their absence from Australia.

By the way Woodswallows are chunky little insectivorous birds found in the south Pacific, Australia and southern and eastern Asia. Australia has six species; White breasted, White browed, Dusky, Little, Black faced and Masked. It would be difficult to identify by its Latin species name only though – albogularis means white-throated, which does not really strike me as this species’ main characteristic. The other species in the genus of Picumnus are all in the Americas, with the Speckled Piculet the only one in Asia.

The species name is cyanouroptera , meaning dark blue tailed and -winged. Of course, me writing about the meaning of “gorgeted” rather than providing bird-specific information indicates a lack of papers on the species.
