I was especially interested in “To Hide From God,” the chapter on songbird slaughter and protection in Cyprus. Has it really been 21 years (almost) from the publication of Jonathan Franzen’s New Yorker article, “ Emptying the Skies ,” six years since the documentary with the same name?

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. And the absurdity is in the reality that the author and the featured person who kills sentient nonhumans for a living, think they're onto something. It's not an ostensible paradox; it's an actual paradox. Potent if symbolic?

A poisoned rodent can kill whatever eats it, and death by poison is a very bad way to go. See the website for a self-congratulatory description of their efforts to plant trees, but no mention of their slaughter of the birds who might want to land on them. as well as a rare mammal, the California fisher.

In the Palm Beach Post 's article, " Animal rights activists appalled by Ale House's lobster game ," the restaurant's owner says he has no plans to remove the game and says the patrons love the novelty. " The final sentence of the article is: " It's no different than a lobster tank in a restaurant," said Palm Beach Ale House owner Jay Starr.
