I'm a vegan who thinks we shouldn't be using animals even if we change the conditions of their use. Of course there are oodles of vegetarians who mention veganism and how difficult and restricting it is, and overall I'm having a fairly disheartening experience. After all, who I am doesn't stop at vegan.

No, he's not a vegan. What I was thinking about was: Did she not watch her own show about the treatment of the animals we use as food? Did she forget that PeTA awarded her " Person of the Year " last year, largely for exposing the conditions of animal farms?

Vegan education/advocacy for animals is easiest for me when I know my audience. And right now, Mercy for Animals' Farm to Fridge Tour is doing that, too, in addition to picketing and getting mainstream media exposure for the short film. PETA's been using horrifying images for years.

It made me think though about the animal rights movement. Animals can't do that. The animals can't say, "This hurts me," "Stop it," or "I have a right to my life." They argue that we are only making things up and assigning anthropomorphic tendencies to animals. Just the sorry animal rights movement. Best Friends?

Animals raised for food suffer miserably. The overwhelming passage in November of Proposition 2 in California, which banned tight confinement of many of the animals raised for food, is a fine example of the power of publicity to educate people about the atrocities we commit to those animals who have no voice of their own.

I immensely enjoyed "EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED" (even on the big screen) and eagerly anticipated "EATING ANIMALS" by Jonathan Safran Foer. Finally, if you know someone who gravitates toward the philosophical issues around our use of animals, this is a good book. Ever, in fact. Not great, but good. He never says he is.

Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. Back then I was a young child and never thought any different about greyhounds or indeed any other animal. He would not return for many hours. Thinking back still touch's me to the point where I feel so guilty-but I knew no different.

As someone who's about to have a one-year old in her life, I was particularly aware of the part animals play in the lives of the children and how animals are talked about. Also, the have families (as if other animals don't). All animals except the dog are called "it" (I did a little experiment to see what would happen).
