If you want to see a virtual fly through of what the new facility will look like, here is a video: I am pretty excited about the new building, especially because there will be a tunnel of sharks to walk under, and more penguins! I also really love the sea turtle, and the “petting” area where you can touch little sharks and rays.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Like I said, at least the sharks are honest in their sharky ways. Which has always mystified me slightly.

These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel. Coral reefs are rare in this part of the world and this makes for exceptional snorkeling and diving.

KING-TV reports that both the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the deaths. The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound.

One of the nice features of the island is a short mangrove broadwalk from which you can watch fish, crabs and several Banded Rails. Searching for kiwi is unlike spotlighting that I’ve done while looking for nocturnal animals in the past. Soon it became dark, and we slowly walked down the paths ringing the island.

The bluefin tuna needs an immediate respite from all fishing. Though some commercial fisheries have been well managed, others have been a disaster (Atlantic halibut, Atlantic cod, Hawaiian lobster, sharks). To the Editor: “ Last Act for the Bluefin ” (editorial, Nov. 9) has it right. It is now or never for the bluefin.
