I recently got a chance to read a charming new book called The Dog Who Healed a Family: And Other True Animal Stories That Warm the Heart & Touch the Soul. The book features short stories of animals who have touched the lives of people. But this book doesn’t just feature dogs, there are stories of all kinds of animals.

We also go to bed when the birds and animals do and arise with them the following day. For ourselves camping is about being at one with nature and unlike those that travel with caravans and every modern convenience we are content in a comfortable chair sitting in the shade beside a dam. We definitely didn’t need a television!

eBird states that White Wagtails are “usually seen as singles, pairs, or small groups”, which seems a sentence rather devoid of any information content. If dinosaurs were the original punks of the animal kingdom, this Eurasian Hoopoe is their proud descendant (Chongming Island).

I never cared much for insects and my interest in plants never got beyond the veggy section of my supermarked – in spite of buying field guides and giving both groups a good try. This is very bad news for a group that is largely nocturnal and has adapted to a secretive lifestyle, and is thus best detected by its tracks and signs.

The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes. When you look at Clements latest taxonomic spreadsheet, you get a sense of the depth of their relationships to each other and the world. In some ways, this is a puzzling chapter.
