I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. Why not the stoat family or the badger family?)

It turns out that people are not the only ones, who can adopt children – animals are good at this as well. Especially it is associated with dogs, which may raise kids of other species and even of scary and dangerous representatives of wildlife! Puma rejected her children and they were given to Mary.

We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide. Vipers dominated, as well as some smaller snakes, but we also found a Sunda Stink-badger and a sleeping Hooded Pitta. The spotlighting at Danum Valley was mixed too.

This is not to say, however, that birders on holiday are, should they choose to travel with family, friends or other assorted loved ones, resigned to seeing nothing, or even nothing except the common stuff. I was thus able to pick an off-the-shelf ecotourism route and, having selected a company, customise it to my family’s needs.
