In Australia we definitely have our fair share of invasive species and the main problem is that we are such a huge land mass with such a small population. The population of Australia is concentrated mainly around the city areas along the coast and many invasive species have been able to spread with ease.

It is also strange, perhaps, that the subject of this short excellent video series, is not from Australia but from the true ‘land of birds’ across the ditch from Australia – New Zealand or Aotearoa. It is a story of recent and future conservation efforts within New Zealand to conserve their endemic bird species.

For example, to irrupt , at least as far as animals are concerned, is simply to enter a region suddenly and in very large numbers. Perhaps our outrage at invasive species can be a bit hypocritical at times. This is probably too much to think about every time you encounter what we consider an invasive species.

Australia is a dry continent and as such all bird-life needs to take advantage of any fresh water that is available. This may be a simple dripping tap, but one of the biggest attractions in Australia is the Poo Ponds. In the event I’m in a life or death struggle with an Oregon Junco or a particularly feral Dunnock I’d rather my birding companion was at least nominally on my side. Australian Magpies are found across Australia, southern New Guinea and have been introduced to New Zealand (along with just about everything else). Dum dum DUM!

There was evidence of the mussels that would be a source of food for many species in the receding water line. There was also evidence of the damage that feral pigs can do all along the trail and along the water’s edge and we soon came across a small group of them. Feral pigs. Australian Pelicans soaring in the thermals.
