A huge gathering of Galahs

There are always stray cattle to watch out for, but we prefer to minimize the risk of hitting animals by leaving on road trips until a couple of hours after sunrise. There is a variation in the colour of Galahs around Australia and the ones in the Kimberley are not as pink as some other areas.

A day trip to Derby

This particular bird species is not common around Broome, but easily found in Derby. The tide was out and we were hopeful of a Great-billed Heron , but luck was not on our side for this species on this visit. Both of these bird species are easier to find in Derby than in Broome. With an obvious hint of disapproval, the HBW remarks that for this species, the “nest [is] a small or bulky but always untidy pad” I suspect the author of these lines lives with teenage children and uses the description of the magpie-robin to vent some frustration with them. But it is all for science, I hear them say. but they do.

Pentecost River birding

On our trip to the north of Western Australia we took the opportunity to visit the Pentecost River, which is south of Wyndham and is near the start of the infamous Gibb River Road. It is not generally advisable to travel from dusk to dawn due to the risk of animals crossing the roads. The start of the Gibb River Road from the east.
