On "Compassion," "Nonviolence" and "Justice"

Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights. Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Then again, so do people who kill animals for a living. After all, they "love" the animals they kill.

This is the message of animal welfare--there is nothing inherently unjust about bringing animals into this world for your own use and/or profit. Compassion, as most people define it, is virtuous, but it smacks of mercy, which screams subjection. Once your priority is justice, your message isn't "eating animals".
