The purpose is to protect ocean species as a whole. I'm not sure how this fits into my support of animal rights though. I think that ocean life, with the exception of mammals, are often overlooked because they are not the sentient, communicating species that we identify with, like primates, dogs, cats, etc.

The obvious choice was the Mallard , that plucky familiar northern hemisphere species that is the father of the even more familiar domesticated duck. In fact, as the species was quickly identified as as creating hybrids with Grey Ducks, the opinion was by the 1920s that the species shouldn’t be released further.

So, I started researching conditions around here for releasing lobsters. So I contacted the Northwest Animal Rights Network for their opinion. Introducing a non-native species could have negative impacts on the ecosystem and the native species already here. It didn't look like it was a good idea.

This is not a book about animal rights, and some might say Foer gets animal rights wrong as his only reference is PETA. What's most disappointing is that Foer is intentional in his message that eating animals isn't okay for him, but that he is excited to support people who kill animals when they don't need to.
