I've always thought of horse-drawn carriages the way I think about greyhound racing or fur: Most people are against them, so why are they still around? Someone wrote me and, though the person clearly was trolling to insult someone, s/he accused me of not being a vegan because of greyhounds Violet Rays and Charles Hobson Booger, III (no mention of Emily, which made me feel terribly neglectful). The real question for today, though, is whether you think it's not vegan to keep nonhuman animals.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. Dear ARAN Members, I remember as a young child throwing stones and sticks at a terrified greyhound that slept in a back shed a few blocks from where I live. He would not return for many hours.

And that means for the animal rights movement: Social entities like compassion, empathy and suffering are very important factors to motivate humans to change their behaviour. In contrast, abstract-rational entities, like personhood or rights, are not. Hence, what we need from this point onwards is psychology and not philosophy.
