The eagles do not breed on Hokkaido, spending only a few winter months there – so if you want to see courtship displays as described in here , you have to go further North a bit later in the year. Their nest is typically built with a base of bark strips and flakes with lumps of earth; with a cup of finer bark shreds, grasses and rootlets, but mainly lined with fur. These are nestlings, just a few days old, in their comfy, fur-lined nest, begging for food. Notice the chick in the upper left corner.

John Bachmann headed west to gather material for Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Somewhere around the Platte River one of the Audubon boys received a black-footed hide from a fur trader. When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population.

Kirtland’s Warbler is a classic niche species; they breed in only very specific conditions, which occur in only a very specific area. this species breeds. Fortunately, there were still a handful of immature birds alive at sea, and a few years later they were back on Toroshima breeding again.
