The species name “tukki” is not derived from a beloved but now extinct Eastern European car brand but from the Sumatran word for woodpecker. However, if out of courtesy one of the other woodpeckers switches the talk to another favorite topic, ants, the Ground Woodpecker is happy to share its experience.

It made us reach for our field guide for North America, but that really does not compare to the real thing. I did not get to appreciate all that America had to offer for the birder until I returned with my husband, Grant, in 1989. Read about them here but also get out and experience them.

The first looked very similar to a Mourning Dove , which of course can be found across the United States. It’s a strange experience looking up from a city street to gaze at birds native to South America; even more ironic considering humans drove the only native parrot/parakeet species, the Carolina Parakeet , to extinction.

That’s Pitta, people, not Antpitta, which is what I foolishly first envisioned, having never birded beyond the Americas.) Hopefully, the publication of The Jewel Hunter in the United States will spur additional attention to this family and the need for rain forest preservation and ornithological study.
