We all have them: our favorite places to take friends and family when they visit, the bird-friendly areas we pop in on when we have the chance, the landscapes that entrance us. Every few minutes we saw these bunched families of gallinules, sometimes mixing with the striped heads of the young grebes as well. We opted for the 12:30 p.m.

The epicenter of large, charismatic, and often photogenic, fish-eating birds is in Florida, at places like Everglades National Park and Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the only site in the park system that could convincingly be named for an exotic dancer. That’s quite the list of charismatic and unique wildlife to add to your potential list of sightings. And Giant Otters are still common in the rivers around Karanambu Ranch, home of the late “otter lady”, Diane McTurck, who used to rehabilitate orphaned otters and whose family still runs the lodge.

Turns out, Monday brought more than a little rain, and we got soaked as we explored the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge along the ocean. Our last and final stop was the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, one of my favorite birding spots.

But for those seeking wildlife there is plenty to see without ever leaving the city, and most itineries at least allow one day of birdwatching within and immediately around this coastal resort city. These guys could eat alligators for lunch. Another common member of the family is the diminutive Peaceful Dove.
