Tufted Puffin. Can Mr. X really tell a Tufted Puffin from a Rhinocerous Auklet ? And no, as you read this, I am not on a boat miles offshore from Half Moon Bay, California, dauntlessly attempting to establish another North American record of Wandering Albatross. The Great Listkeeper In The Sky would understand…right?

In Hawaii I stood on a beach as albatrosses fledged and Tiger Sharks prowled for the less successful ones. There is no feeling in the world like knowing your helping something you care about, whether its sharks or puffins, protecting forests or reefs, advancing science or communities. This Laysan Albatross died from ingested plastic.

No Atlantic Puffins , no Dovekies , no Thick-billed Murres ! But when you spend $185 and invest twelve hours you really hope for something spectacular, like a surprise albatross or at least a skua. Common Murre Uria aalge. Despite the lack of hoped-for species diversity we still had a good time. This was largely thanks to gannets.

For the larger albatrosses and the frigatebirds it is common to take longer and have rest years between attempts. The auks, which range from puffins to guillemots all the way to the tiny auklets and murrelets, are typical for seabirds, long lived with tiny clutches of one or two eggs.

On the coast Leach’s Storm-Petrels and Tufted Puffins nest on a few select seastacks, and in winter Harlequin Ducks and Rock Sandpipers can be reliably found in a couple of spots. Hawaiian Petrel has become an annual visitor in recent years, and albatross are more abundant in this part of the state.
