In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. This species may need help with habitat management and cowbird removal for some time to come, but luckily Kirtland’s have responded very well to efforts to keep them around. This male Short-tailed Albatross has fledged 2 chicks from Eastern Island, Midway Atoll, the only place in the U.S. this species breeds.

The ferry is a very nice powered catamaran, that moves right along at 18-20 knots, but in 3-4 meter seas, that will make for a pretty bumpy ride. Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand.
