In Costa Rica, this past year has seen expected additions like Lesser Black-backed Gull and Crimson-backed Tanager along with somewhat less expected birds like Yellow-nosed Albatross in the Caribbean and an equally mega probable Salvin’s Albatross in the Pacific. However, the latest addition wasn’t any of these.

In fact, the overwhelming majority of federal land is in just 11 western states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming). For example, most of the world’s Black-footed and Laysan Albatross and Ashy Storm-Petrel breed on these islands.

” Southern Arizona , including visits to Ramsey Canyon Preserve and Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve. Lifers included Painted Redstart, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, Arizona Woodpecker, and Rivoli’s, Violet-crowned, Lucifer, and Broad-billed hummingbird. It truly is the “Warbler Capital of the World.”

but I really feel I should nominate an albatross, if only because I love taunting Corey about them. I’ll go for the Black-browed Albatross , in celebration of the fact that conservation efforts have resulted in this species being downgraded from endangered to near threatened this year. He wrote about it in more detail here.

the same few states always come to mind first…Alaska, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Hawaiian Petrel has become an annual visitor in recent years, and albatross are more abundant in this part of the state. When one thinks of taking a birdcation somewhere in the U.S., That’s where everyone goes, and for good reason.
